The mountains peaks are also easily enjoyed by rock climbers and any other regular tourist out there. For the history enthusiast, this island has a vast and interesting story to tell. First inhabited by Polynesian natives and later found by James Cook in 1769 and landed upon in 1777. Afterwards a missionary society founded a protestant church. It was also made a protectorate by France in 1842. It was even used as a military supply base by the United States during World War II. Although the base in the island saw no action and was closed afterwards, most of the military men chose to stay and thus was born an island of relaxation and beach resorts. This rich history has made the island rich in culture and diversity as well, with people speaking French or Italian with fluency in English but recently. This island is perfect to people who just like to sit back and take a load off from the hustle and bustle of the city life. Surely an island with such breath taking beauty, luscious plants, diverse wildlife, pristine beaches and a colorful barrier reef would catch anyone's attention.
